Paralympian – A Film by Aldiyar Bayrakimov

2022 | Drama | 124 min | FSK –
TICKETS

Since childhood, the skier Maksat has been dreaming of Olympic gold. However, a tragic accident intervenes: Maksat loses a leg. For a long time, he sinks into depression, until he receives the offer to participate in the Paralympic Games – and Maksat transforms his handicap into a strength.

The film is based on true events in the life of Paralympic athletes such as Alexander Kolyadin: the first winner of the Paralympic Winter Games in Kazakh history, who won the 1.5 km sprint in PyeongChang in 2018.

Statement on the film entry:

“The excellent script not only tells a gripping superhero story; the film also makes us think about our interaction with and behaviour towards people with special needs. Today, 700,000 people with disabilities live in Kazakhstan, 14 per cent of whom are children. The government promotes measures to help these citizens and their integration into society. Para athletes – such as those who won four silver and two bronze medals for Kazakhstan at the 36th International German Para Swimming Championships – are motivating role models for the whole society.”
